Teach in Canada and Abroad

We offer a TESOL Certificate program that conforms to TESL Canada standards and Language Canada’s Quality Assurance guidelines. Trainees will be able to explore teaching, learning and language through task-based, participatory and interactive practice.

Program Duration

5 weeks (100 instructional hours, plus a 20-hour practicum)

Program Schedule*

Monday to Friday, 9:00AM – 2:00 PM + practicum When a statutory holiday occurs, class hours will be made up on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Practicum

Trainees become classroom-ready by teaching international students, alongside their TESL Canada approved host teacher, in a DEA College classroom during their Practicum week using the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the TESOL Certificate Program.

Learning Objectives

  • Reflect on demonstrated professionalism and employ/observe appropriate classroom management techniques. 
  • Identify sequence lesson stages appropriate to respective systems and skills in the English language.
  • Reflect the preparation skills (planning) and classroom skills (methods and techniques) covered in the course.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the systems of English: phonology, lexis, grammar, discourse.
  • Produce clear, logical lesson plans with correct stages, timing, procedure, objectives and rationale. 
  • Apply learning theories and justify use of methodology and/or lesson framework. 
  • Connect lesson planning elements to the conditions of learning.
  • Select, justify, and use classroom activities that promote language acquisition.
  • Evaluate learner needs (in theory and practice) and determine areas for further study.
  • Demonstrate core principles in English Language Teaching such as eliciting, concept checking, giving instructions etc.
  • Utilize appropriate strategies for teaching productive and receptive skills
